Contact lenses are a convenient, and often cost-efficient, solution for vision correction. They don't interfere with your appearance, and they effectively correct your vision. Plus, it's much cheaper to replace a pair of contacts if you lose or damage them, then it is to replace glasses. At Edward Bancroft, OD and Palmer Vision Clinic, serving Palmer and Anchorage, AK, we offer contact lens exams and fittings to help you find the ideal contacts for you.
Visual Acuity Testing
Before you receive contact lenses, you must first undergo a visual acuity test. This test consists of you looking into lenses. Our optometrist will switch the magnifying power of the lenses until you find the one that you can see optimally through. Based on the results, our optometrist can determine the power of contacts you need.
Your visual acuity test also includes a portion to determine if you have astigmatism. This part of the exam is simple. You identify which one of two pictures is clearer. Our eye doctor will have you complete a series of these.
Eye Health Exam
Our eye doctor will conduct various tests to evaluate the health of your eyes. During this portion of your exam, our optometrist is looking for signs of glaucoma, cataracts, retinopathy, and macular degeneration. For instance, the glaucoma test is the one where our eye doctor has you sit in front of a machine that blows air into your eye. This checks the pressure of your eyes.
Another portion of the exam uses a magnifying device to look inside your eyes. Our eye doctor can examine your retina and check for clouding on your lenses. Other tests may be given, depending on your current eye problems as well as your age.
Contact Lens Fitting
Before you can get your contact lenses, our optometrist must determine the size of your eyes. We want your contacts to fit appropriately, or they could slide out of place. Poorly fittings contacts may irritate your eyes as well. For the fitting, you'll need to look into a machine. The machine determines the dimensions of your eyes, and our optometrist uses these measurements to fit you for contacts.
After your fitting, our optometrist takes into consideration your eyes' sizes to determine a brand for you. We will also take into consideration if you have any issues like astigmatism or corneal problems. Sometimes, special contact lenses like toric or scleral could be a better match to optimize your vision than standard contacts.
